The SIG Sauer SIG516 is a premium AR-15–pattern rifle introduced in 2010, chambered primarily in 5.56×45mm NATO, and engineered around a short-stroke gas piston operating system rather than the traditional direct-impingement system used by most AR-15 rifles. Developed by engineers Robert Hirt and Chris Sirois, the SIG516 was designed to combine the familiar ergonomics and modularity of the AR-15 with the cleaner, cooler-running characteristics of a piston-driven action. It utilizes a rotating, multi-lug bolt and a four-position adjustable gas regulator, allowing the rifle to be tuned for standard ammunition, adverse conditions, or suppressed operation. Standard models feature a 16-inch chrome-lined, cold hammer-forged barrel with a 1:7 twist rate, a free-floating quad-rail handguard, flip-up iron sights, M16-style flash suppressor, and compatibility with standard STANAG AR-15 magazines. Additional enhancements include a proprietary bolt carrier group, anti-carrier-tilt design, and high-strength forged aluminum upper and lower receivers, all intended to improve durability and reliability under sustained firing conditions. The SIG516 remained in production until 2019, when it was largely replaced by the MCX series in SIG Sauer's commercial lineup.
