Manufactured in Japan by Howa Machinery for Smith & Wesson, the Model 1000 was created to compete with popular autoloading shotguns of the era such as the Remington 1100 and Winchester Super X Model 1. The shotgun was chambered primarily in 12 gauge, with some versions also available in 20 gauge, and certain models were capable of handling both 2¾-inch and 3-inch magnum shells depending on configuration.
