The Smith & Wesson Model 10, also known as the .38 Military & Police, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and built on the K-frame in both round-butt and square-butt configurations. Introduced circa 1946 as a continuation of the postwar .38 Military & Police Victory Model, it became one of Smith & Wesson’s most widely produced and enduring service revolvers. Originally offered with pinned barrels in 2", 4", 5", or 6" lengths, 3" barrels were available by special order before later becoming regularly cataloged, while 2 1/2" variants were produced for special contracts. Available in blue or nickel finishes, the Model 10 features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56". Square-butt examples were fitted with checked walnut Magna-style grips with Smith & Wesson medallions, while later round-butt models adopted synthetic grips. Early postwar examples retained the forged round-blade front sight and square-notch rear sight inherited from wartime models, which were later replaced by a 1/10" serrated ramp front sight and eventually a 1/8" serrated ramp. Mechanically, the original five-screw K-frame design was later simplified to a four-screw configuration by removing the upper sideplate screw and eventually to a three-screw configuration by eliminating the trigger-guard screw. Early production models used a .265" checked hammer and serrated trigger, while later examples adopted a .312" smooth combat trigger and .265" service hammer. The gas ring position alternated between the cylinder and yoke during production, and frame dimensions varied slightly between heavy-barrel and tapered-barrel variants.

The Model 10 also shared serial numbering with related Models 11, 12, 45, and the Aircrewman. Late-production examples feature a 10-groove serrated round-butt frame, a MIM (metal injection molded) thumbpiece, and the Model 10-11 revision introduced a new redesigned frame with a machined cylinder stop lug, MIM hammer and trigger, and a floating firing pin. Typical weights include approximately 26 ounces for 2" models, 30.5 ounces for standard 4" models, and 34 ounces for 4" heavy-barrel variants. In 2002, Smith & Wesson introduced an internal key-lock mechanism. Produced from circa 1946 to the present, the Model 10 remains one of the company’s most iconic and longest-running revolvers.
