The Smith & Wesson Model 13, introduced in 1974 as the .357 Magnum Military & Police Heavy Barrel, is a double-action revolver built on the company’s versatile 3-screw K service frame. Continuing the evolution of the heavy-barrel Model 10-6 prototypes, it offered an ideal balance of moderate weight and magnum firepower, making it well-suited for duty use and famously serving as a popular issue sidearm for the F.B.I. in 1974 and again from 1986 to 1987. Mechanically, the revolver features a smooth backstrap and forestrap, a non-shrouded extractor rod, a .312-inch smooth combat trigger, and a .265-inch service hammer. It was produced in two primary configurations: a compact 3-inch pinned barrel version with a round butt weighing 31 ounces, and a duty-sized 4-inch pinned heavy barrel variant with a square butt weighing 34 ounces.

Equipped with fixed combat sights consisting of a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front and a square notch rear, this rugged weapon—not to be confused with the aluminum-frame M-13 Aircrewman—remained in production until 1999, securing its place as one of Smith & Wesson’s most iconic service revolvers.
