In 1990, S&W introduced a full-lug barrel variant of the Model 17 built on the square-butt target K-frame with three screws. It retained the six-shot fluted cylinder (nominal 1.62") and was offered with 4", 6", or 8-3/8" full-lug ribbed barrels, blued finish only, and wood combat-style grips with S&W medallions. Hammer and trigger options were similar (.375" semi or .500" full target hammer; .400" target or .312" smooth combat trigger), with a counterbored cylinder and a pinned 1/8" Patridge front sight on a ramp base plus adjustable micrometer rear. Early 17-6 examples may be found without the full lug; the full-lug version was cataloged from 1990 to 1995.
