Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 36 is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, built on the J-frame with early five-screw construction. It was offered in 2-inch and 3-inch pinned barrels with round-butt or square-butt frames, finished in blued or nickel. Early production featured a five-shot fluted cylinder with a ramp front sight and square-notch rear sight, paired with walnut grips with diamond-shaped screw escutcheons. Later examples standardized a .312-inch smooth combat trigger, replacing the original .240-inch serrated service trigger, while retaining a .240-inch service hammer. Early frames display a small S&W trademark on the left side, with later frames slightly enlarged. Transitional and later frames appeared in three-, four-, and five-screw configurations, and early examples had shorter grips that do not interchange with later production. Approximately 1,740 revolvers were produced with target sights, closely related to the Model 50 Chief’s Special Target configuration. Additional features include a shrouded extractor rod and a frame slightly larger in the yoke area to accommodate the longer .38 Special cartridge. In 1989, Smith & Wesson introduced the LadySmith version of the Model 36, designed to appeal to female shooters. It featured ergonomically contoured grips and a redesigned double-action mechanism, with “LADYSMITH” engraved on the frame. The Model 36 was produced from circa 1950 to 1999.
