Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38/200 British Service Revolver (Model K-200) is a definitive wartime double-action sidearm, manufactured between 1940 and 1945 to supply British and Commonwealth forces through the Lend-Lease Act. Mechanically identical to the .38 Hand Ejector Model 1905 (4th Change) and sharing its five-screw, square-butt K-frame foundation with the domestic U.S. Victory Model, this variant is uniquely distinguished by its chambering in .38 S&W caliber tailored for a heavy 200-grain bullet. Production initially began around serial number 680,000 as a continuation of S&W's pre-war commercial series, featuring a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a 1.56-inch nominal length, a 1/10-inch round blade front sight, and options for 4-inch, 5-inch, or 6-inch pinned barrels, though the 5-inch length became the military standard. Frontline service models discarded the checkered diamond monogram grips of commercial versions for smooth, uncheckered walnut grips paired with a utilitarian lanyard ring anchored to the butt. To accelerate manufacturing, S&W transitioned from a high-polish bright blue to a non-reflective matte finish known as "Black Magic," delivering 110,379 units using this specialized chemical blackening process. As the war progressed, the serial numbering shifted from the pre-war range with the iconic "V" for Victory prefix, starting at V1 and running concurrently alongside .38 Special production.

Early Lend-Lease deliveries were stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" or "U.S. Property" on the top strap to fulfill legislative tracking, accompanied by "Made in U.S.A." on the frame and wartime inspection stamps like "W.B." or "G.H.D." A critical turning point occurred following a fatal shipboard accident where a dropped revolver discharged, forcing S&W to introduce a new slide-action hammer block safety in December 1944. Revolvers built with this upgrade received an "SV" prefix starting at SV769,001, until production concluded around SV811,119. With the massive volume of wartime K-frames produced, the 568,204 units of this British contract variant comprised the absolute majority of S&W's wartime output, cementing their legacy as a cornerstone of international Allied collaboration and a highly prized piece for modern military firearms collectors.
