The Smith & Wesson Model 38 Airweight, also known as the Bodyguard Airweight, is a classic J-Frame revolver that combines lightweight construction with one of the most innovative concealed carry designs of its era. Introduced in 1955 and later designated the Model 38 when Smith & Wesson adopted model numbers in 1957, the revolver is chambered in .38 Special and features a five-shot cylinder, a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, and a carbon steel barrel and cylinder finished in either blue or nickel, depending on the variation. Its defining characteristic is the distinctive shrouded hammer, which provides a snag-free draw from a pocket or holster while still allowing the hammer to be manually cocked for precise single-action fire—a feature that set it apart from both the exposed-hammer Model 37 Airweight and the fully enclosed-hammer Centennial models. Equipped with a 1?-inch barrel, fixed sights, and compact walnut or later synthetic grips, the Model 38 offers an excellent balance of concealability, controllability, and dependable performance. Long favored by plainclothes law enforcement officers, undercover detectives, and licensed concealed carriers, the Model 38 Airweight has earned a lasting reputation for reliability, craftsmanship, and practical design. Today, early "no-dash" examples and well-preserved variants remain highly sought after by Smith & Wesson collectors, making it one of the company's most iconic lightweight defensive revolvers.
