Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38/44 Outdoorsman Model of 1950, also known as the Pre-Model 23, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and built on the square-butt target N-frame with five-screw construction. Introduced in September 1950 as the postwar continuation of Smith & Wesson’s earlier .38/44 Outdoorsman line, the revolver was designed as a heavy-duty .38 Special platform intended for target shooting, law enforcement use, and outdoor carry. It features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.57" and was offered in polished blue or nickel finishes. The Model of 1950 introduced several notable refinements over earlier prewar examples, including a raised ribbed barrel, an adjustable micrometer-click rear sight, and a Patridge front sight for improved target accuracy. Additional features include a shrouded extractor rod with a uniform-diameter extractor rod knurled at the end, a .400" target hammer—with an optional .500" version available—and a .265" serrated trigger paired with a short-throw action. The revolver also displays the Smith & Wesson trademark on the sideplate and is fitted with Magna-style diamond walnut grips. Serial numbers fall within the N-frame S-prefix range of approximately S75000 to S261999, with roughly 6,039 examples manufactured between circa 1950 and 1957. In 1957, the revolver transitioned into Smith & Wesson’s numerical model designation system and continued production as the Model 23 until 1966.
