The Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change, is a double-action revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special and built on the K-frame platform with five-screw construction. Produced as a foundational evolution of Smith & Wesson’s ubiquitous service line, this revolver features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56" and was offered with barrel lengths of 2, 4, 5, or 6 inches. Changes from the 1905 3rd change were primarily internal, the largest being the addition of a small hammer block that's activated by the hand. The hammer block is installed in the sideplate with a small spring pushing it out when released by hand. This small block can be observed by looking directly behind the hammer and cock the gun slowly, and the block will move to the right. Alongside these mechanical updates, the 4th Change added heat-treated cylinders beginning around serial number 316648 to increase structural strength. The model was offered in fixed-service configurations with a rounded front blade and a top-strap rear notch, or as a Target variation with a square-cut front blade and an adjustable rear sight contoured to the frame. Depending on the setup, it utilized a .265" checkered hammer paired with a .265" smooth trigger on service models or a serrated trigger on target versions. Standard production models were built with either a standard square-butt frame or a scarcer round-butt frame, clothed in hard rubber or checkered walnut grips featuring gold S&W monograms and a diamond pattern around the grip screw.
