Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 442, also known as the .38 Special Centennial Airweight, is a double-action-only revolver chambered in .38 Special. Introduced in 1993, it was built on the round-butt J-frame with a 3-screw construction and served as the modern production successor to the Model 042. It features a completely concealed hammer, a 1-7/8-inch barrel, and a lightweight aluminum alloy frame paired with a steel barrel, yoke, and 5-shot fluted cylinder. Early production models featured a nominal cylinder length of 1.53 inches. The later introduction of the J-Magnum frame slightly increased the frame size and extended the cylinder length to 1.59 inches. Standard features included a .312-inch smooth trigger and Uncle Mike’s Boot grips. For aiming, it utilized a serrated ramp front sight paired with an integral square-notch rear sight. The revolver was offered in either a matte blue or satin nickel finish. Marking variations changed over time; early 1993 units were stamped "Airweight" on the barrel, which was briefly deleted before returning in 1994 as a laser inscription on the sideplate. The barrels were marked "Smith & Wesson" on the left side and ".38 S&W Spl." on the right. The S&W trademark was initially laser-etched on the sideplate; later production units featured the trademark on the frame directly under the thumbpiece. Notably, unlike other S&W revolver frames, the eventual introduction of the internal lock system did not enlarge the frame's hammer area, as the internal parts were slightly reduced in size to accommodate the mechanism. Smith & Wesson has produced the Model 442 from 1993 to the present day.
