Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson 4516-2 is a compact stainless steel semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP that became highly respected for combining the powerful performance of a full-size defensive cartridge with the durability and reliability of Smith & Wesson’s third-generation pistol design. Manufactured by Smith & Wesson in the 1990s, the 4516-2 was part of the company’s extensive third-generation handgun lineup, a series widely regarded as among the finest traditional double-action semi-automatic pistols ever produced in the United States. Built with a compact stainless steel frame and slide, the pistol was engineered for concealed carry, law enforcement backup use, and personal defense while still maintaining the robust construction needed for extensive shooting with .45 ACP ammunition. One of the defining characteristics of the 4516-2 was its all-stainless-steel construction, which provided exceptional durability and corrosion resistance while also adding enough weight to significantly soften recoil compared to lighter alloy-framed compact pistols. The handgun utilized a traditional double-action/single-action trigger system with a slide-mounted safety and decocking lever, allowing the first shot to be fired with a longer, deliberate double-action pull followed by lighter single-action operation for subsequent shots. The pistol typically featured a 3.75-inch barrel, fixed combat sights, wraparound grip panels, and a single-stack magazine holding seven rounds of .45 ACP. Mechanically, the 4516-2 operated on a short-recoil locked-breech system that earned a strong reputation for reliability and smooth cycling with a wide variety of ammunition, including defensive hollow points. In practical use, the pistol became known for its excellent accuracy, manageable recoil, and tank-like durability, with many shooters praising its solid feel and dependable operation under harsh conditions.

Despite its compact dimensions, the weight of the steel frame helped make the .45 ACP cartridge surprisingly controllable, contributing to quick follow-up shots and comfortable extended range sessions. The pistol also gained popularity among plainclothes law enforcement officers and concealed carriers who preferred traditional metal-frame handguns over the lighter polymer-framed pistols that were beginning to dominate the market at the time. Shooters frequently appreciated the pistol’s ergonomic grip shape, smooth trigger action, and straightforward controls, all of which reflected the mature engineering of Smith & Wesson’s third-generation designs. Although eventually discontinued as polymer-framed striker-fired pistols became increasingly dominant, the 4516-2 maintained a loyal following among enthusiasts who valued all-metal construction, traditional DA/SA operation, and the proven effectiveness of the .45 ACP cartridge. Today, the Smith & Wesson 4516-2 is regarded as one of the finest compact .45 ACP pistols of the third-generation era, admired for its rugged stainless-steel construction, reliability, controllable shooting characteristics, and reputation as a durable and refined defensive sidearm.
