The Smith & Wesson Model 46 is a classic American .22 Long Rifle target pistol produced by Smith & Wesson during the late 1950s and 1960s as a simplified, more affordable counterpart to the company’s highly regarded target pistol, the Smith & Wesson Model 41. Introduced in 1957, the Model 46 retained the same basic blowback-operated semi-automatic design and overall profile as the Model 41 but omitted many of the expensive cosmetic refinements in order to reduce cost and appeal to a wider market of shooters and military trainees. Chambered for the economical and low-recoiling .22 LR cartridge, the pistol was intended for precision practice, marksmanship training, and recreational target shooting, and it was adopted in 1959 by the U.S. Air Force for basic marksmanship instruction. Externally, the Model 46 closely resembles its parent design, featuring a slim steel frame, detachable box magazine, and a long target-style barrel that provided a generous sight radius for improved accuracy. Early examples commonly carried a 7-inch barrel, while later variations were offered with 5-inch and 5½-inch barrels to provide more compact handling options. To keep the pistol economical, Smith & Wesson omitted the high-polish blue finish, checkered walnut stocks, and other refined details found on the Model 41, instead equipping the Model 46 with simpler finishing and plastic grip panels.
