Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 559 is a classic second-generation semi-automatic pistol introduced in the late 1970s as the all-steel counterpart to Smith & Wesson’s high-capacity Model 59 series. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the Model 559 was part of Smith & Wesson’s transition from the original Model 39/59 designs into the improved three-digit second-generation lineup. Built with a carbon-steel frame and slide, the Model 559 featured a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger system, slide-mounted safety/decocker, fixed or adjustable sights depending on configuration, and a 14-round double-stack magazine. Weighing around 40 ounces, it offered excellent recoil control and durability compared with lighter alloy-frame pistols. Produced primarily from 1979 through the mid-1980s, the Model 559 represented Smith & Wesson’s attempt to compete with other emerging high-capacity service pistols of the era and was used by some law enforcement agencies before the widespread adoption of newer third-generation designs.
