Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 586, also known as the .357 Distinguished Combat Magnum, is a double/single-action revolver built on a carbon steel, square-butt target L-frame with three-screw construction. Chambered in .357 Magnum and .38 Special, it was offered in either a blued or nickel finish. It features a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.62 inches and came in 4-inch, 6-inch, or 8-3/8-inch full-lug barrels. The 4-inch barrel includes a 1/8-inch Baughman front sight, while the longer barrels feature either a 1/8-inch red ramp or a plain Patridge front sight paired with a white-outline adjustable rear sight. Additionally, an adjustable four-position front sight was offered on the 6-inch and 8-3/8-inch barrels. It was equipped with a .375-inch semi-target hammer and either a .400-inch target trigger or a .312-inch smooth trigger on the 4-inch and 6-inch variants, with the 6-inch version including an adjustable trigger stop. The revolver typically came with checkered Target Goncalo Alves grips with S&W medallions and speedloader cutouts (however, this particular example features a Pachmayr rubber grip with finger grooves and Texturing), mounted on a square-butt frame with a serrated 10-groove backstrap and forestrap. Production of this model marked the first use of S&W's three-letter, four-digit serial numbering system, beginning in June 1980 with ranges from AAA0001 to AAA0094, AAA0790 to AAA2005, and AAA4868 to AAB2203. The lowest known example of this model is serial number AAA0003, which features a 6-inch barrel. The Model 586 was produced from circa 1980 to 1999.
