Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 59, also known as the 9mm 14-shot autoloading pistol, is a traditional double/single-action semi-automatic handgun built on a lightweight alloy frame paired with a carbon steel slide. Chambered in 9mm, the Model 59 is heavily derived from the Model 39 but is distinguished by its high-capacity, 14-round double-stack magazine. It was offered in either a blued or bright nickel finish, paired with checkered black nylon grips (some were later fitted with wood grips). For sights, the pistol is equipped with a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight designed to reduce glare and optimize target acquisition, paired with a fully adjustable micrometer-click rear sight featuring a square notch for precise windage and elevation adjustments. Notably, 100 early versions featured smooth front and rear grip straps, starting at about serial number A170000 and scattered throughout early production. Reportedly, approximately 20 guns were made with both smooth front and rear straps. Approximately another 80 were retrofitted with a serrated rear strap and kept the front strap smooth; otherwise, standard production featured serrated front and rear grip straps. Production spanned from circa 1971 to 1982, with production reaching approximately 231,841 pistols, with the final unit officially leaving the factory and shipping on July 1, 1982, bearing serial number A747407.
