Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is a double-action revolver chambered in .44 Magnum, featuring a six-round capacity. Manufactured by the American company Smith & Wesson, the Model 29 was offered in a range of standard barrel lengths, including 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 1/2, 8 3/8, and 10 5/8 inches. Additional barrel lengths were available through Smith & Wesson’s Custom Shop or from qualified gunsmiths. The revolver was produced with two premium finishes: highly polished blue steel or nickel plating. Upon its introduction, the Model 29 was recognized as one of the most powerful production handguns of its time. However, it was later surpassed by revolvers chambered for larger cartridges such as the .454 Casull and .50 Action Express. The Model 29 achieved iconic status through its association with the fictional character “Dirty Harry” Callahan, cementing its place in both firearm history and popular culture. Introduced in 1978, Smith & Wesson expanded the platform with the Model 629, a stainless-steel counterpart to the Model 29 designed to offer enhanced corrosion resistance and durability for hard field use.

The Model 629 designation follows Smith & Wesson’s convention of denoting stainless steel revolvers by adding a 6 to the original model number. The Model 629 retained the proven design and power of the Model 29 while appealing to shooters and collectors who favored the practicality and modern aesthetic of stainless steel, further solidifying the Model 29/629 lineage as one of the most iconic big-bore revolver families in American firearms history.
