The Smith & Wesson Model 639 is a second-generation semi-automatic pistol that was built upon the successful foundation of the earlier Model 39 series, combining improved durability, higher magazine capacity, and stainless steel construction into a dependable service-style handgun that became popular with law enforcement officers and civilian shooters during the late 20th century. Manufactured by Smith & Wesson, the Model 639 was chambered in 9mm Luger and utilized a traditional double-action/single-action operating system with a slide-mounted safety and decocker, allowing the pistol to be safely carried with a chambered round while providing a double-action first shot followed by lighter single-action follow-up shots.
