The Smith & Wesson Model 686 "No Dash" is the original production version of what would become one of the most respected .357 Magnum revolvers ever manufactured, marking the debut of Smith & Wesson's innovative L-frame seriesin 1980. Developed in response to concerns that extensive use of full-power .357 Magnum ammunition could accelerate wear in the smaller K-frame magnums such as the Model 19 and Model 66, the 686 was engineered to provide a stronger platform while maintaining a size and balance suitable for law enforcement officers, competitive shooters, and civilian enthusiasts. The no-dash 686 featured a forged stainless steel L-frame, a six-shot cylinder chambered for both .357 Magnum and .38 Special, and a full underlug barrel that extended the entire length of the barrel, adding weight to reduce muzzle flip and improve controllability during rapid fire. Offered in barrel lengths including 2½ inches, 4 inches, 6 inches, and 8? inches, the revolver was adaptable to a variety of roles ranging from concealed carry and duty use to hunting and precision target shooting. Revolvers that received the factory update were stamped with an "M" inside the yoke cut, and examples bearing this mark are generally preferred by shooters due to the completed modification, while unmodified examples may hold additional interest for collectors seeking originality. Despite this early issue, the Model 686 quickly established itself as an exceptionally durable and accurate revolver, combining the handling characteristics of the K-frame with increased strength and longevity.
