The Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield is a landmark compact semi-automatic pistol introduced in 2012 as a slimmer, more concealable member of Smith & Wesson’s successful M&P (Military & Police) polymer pistol family. Designed specifically for everyday carry and personal defense, the original Shield was chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and .40 S&W, featuring a polymer frame, stainless-steel slide with Melonite finish, striker-fired action, 3.1-inch barrel, single-stack magazine, and an unloaded weight of approximately 19 ounces. Its extremely slim profile—less than one inch wide—made it one of the most popular concealed-carry pistols of its era. The Shield incorporated many M&P design features including interchangeable grip ergonomics, a passive trigger safety, loaded chamber indicator, accessory compatibility, and optional manual thumb safety. Its combination of reliability, affordability, manageable recoil, and compact size helped make it one of the best-selling concealed-carry handguns of the 2010s.
