The Smith & Wesson M&P 9 is a modern striker-fired 9mm pistol that launched in 2005 as Smith & Wesson’s entry into the duty-grade polymer handgun market. Built around a lightweight polymer frame with a stainless steel chassis, it was designed specifically for law enforcement and civilian defensive use, emphasizing reliability, durability, and simplicity. The M&P 9 uses a consistent striker-fired trigger system, interchangeable backstraps for different hand sizes, and an ergonomic 18-degree grip angle that naturally points on target. Over time it evolved into the M2.0 series (2017), which improved the trigger, grip texture, and internal chassis design, making it more competitive with other modern duty pistols. It is offered in multiple barrel lengths and configurations including full-size, compact, and optics-ready variants, typically feeding from 15- or 17-round magazines depending on model.
