Originally developed in the early 1950s for U.S. Military sidearm trials, the Smith & Wesson Model 39 holds historic distinction as America's first domestic double-action semi-automatic 9mm handgun. Built on a lightweight anodized aluminum frame paired with a sleek single-stack profile, the Model 39 paved the way for generations of American duty and personal defense pistols. The 39-2 engineering revision, introduced in 1971, resolved early extractor reliability issues by adopting a redesigned, highly durable spring-loaded extractor system. This specific example bears serial number A411182, placing its manufacture in approximately 1977–1978. Featuring a deep factory blued steel slide, lightweight anodized frame, serrated front sight, windage-adjustable rear sight, slide-mounted safety/decocker lever, and checkered walnut grips with gold S&W medallions, this pistol displays outstanding overall preservation. The blued finish on the slide retains rich gloss, while the anodized frame displays crisp geometry with minimal high-edge handling wear. Mechanically, the action cycles smoothly, the safety/decocker functions properly, and the 4-inch barrel exhibits a bright, mirror-like bore with sharp rifling. Complete with its factory serial-matching blue box, instruction manual, warranty literature, factory cleaning kit (rod, swab, brush), and 2 factory single-stack 9mm magazines, this S&W Model 39-2 offers a complete, highly collectible package for vintage Smith & Wesson enthusiasts.
