Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1980 alongside its stainless counterpart (the Model 686), the Smith & Wesson Model 586 Distinguished Combat Magnum was built on S&W's purpose-engineered medium-large L-frame platform. Designed to provide long-term frame endurance under continuous high-velocity .357 Magnum fire, the 586 combined an advantageous full-length barrel underlug for recoil mitigation with classic carbon steel blued construction. Early "No-Dash" production examples from the initial years of the 1980s hold premier status among Smith & Wesson collectors due to their pre-lock design, forged internal components, case-hardened hammer and trigger, and exceptionally rich blued finishes. This specific example bears the highly desirable "No-Dash" engineering designation with serial number AAN8304, placing its production in approximately 1982. Featuring a 4-inch full underlug barrel, red ramp front sight, white-outline micro-adjustable rear sight, case-hardened target hammer and trigger, and factory checkered wood target stocks with gold S&W medallions, this revolver displays stunning overall preservation. The original high-gloss factory blued finish remains remarkably deep and reflective throughout, showing minimal evidence of handling or age. Mechanically, the cylinder locks up with precise tightness, the double-action and single-action trigger pulls break with target-grade crispness, and the 4-inch bore exhibits bright, sharp rifling. This early "No-Dash" blued Smith & Wesson Model 586 represents an outstanding investment-grade centerpiece for serious Smith & Wesson wheelgun collectors.
