Introduced in 1991 on Smith & Wesson's small J-frame architecture, the Model 940 Centennial was a ground-breaking development: a snubnose stainless steel concealed-carry revolver chambered in the rimless 9mm Parabellum cartridge using moon clips for rapid extraction and reloading. While the standard 1-7/8" barrel version enjoyed steady law enforcement adoption, S&W produced a extremely low volume of 3-inch full underlug barrel variants. Coveted by advanced Smith & Wesson collectors, the 3-inch Model 940 provides noticeable recoil mitigation, extended sight radius, and ideal belt-carry balance while maintaining the snag-free enclosed internal hammer design. This specific example bears desirable "No-Dash" engineering designation with serial number BKN2169, placing its production in approximately 1991–1992 during the first run of 3-inch production. Featuring all-stainless steel construction, a 3-inch full underlug barrel, custom smooth hardwood finger-groove combat grips with gold S&W medallions, and a snag-free double-action only action, this revolver displays stunning overall preservation. The satin stainless finish remains exceptionally bright and clean throughout, exhibiting minimal handling or storage marks. Mechanically, the cylinder timing and lockup are bank-vault tight, the DAO trigger pull is remarkably smooth, and the 3-inch bore displays a mirror-bright finish with sharp, defined rifling.
