The Smith & Wesson Model 627-3 Performance Center is an N-frame, 8-shot .357 Magnum revolver produced during the late 1990s to early 2000s era of Smith & Wesson’s Performance Center development, when the company was refining its large-frame stainless revolvers for both competition and high-performance defensive use. Built on the heavy-duty N-frame originally designed for magnum cartridges, the 627-3 uses a stainless steel construction with a double-action/single-action trigger system, and it is engineered around an 8-round cylinder capacity, which was a major increase over traditional 6-shot .357 revolvers. The Performance Center version of the 627-3 was hand-fitted and tuned for a smoother trigger pull, improved lockup consistency, and tighter mechanical tolerances compared to standard production N-frame revolvers. While most examples from this period are known for their unfluted 8-shot cylinders, some factory or distributor-specific runs were produced with fluted cylinders, which is less common and typically associated with special allocation batches rather than the standard catalog configuration. Barrel lengths varied depending on run and distributor order, but common Performance Center configurations centered around 4", 5", and 6.5" barrels, often with slab-sided or heavy underlug profiles to balance weight and recoil control.
