The Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum, universally designated by collectors as the “Pre-Model 29,” is a six-shot double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .44 Magnum and built on the square-butt N-Target frame in the highly sought-after five-screw configuration. Introduced in January 1956, this legendary firearm represents the birth of the factory .44 Magnum cartridge lineage and was offered primarily with a deep carbon blue finish, with factory nickel finishes being exceptionally rare and distinguished by an "N" stamp applied to both the side of the grip frame and the rear face of the cylinder. Collector research indicates that approximately 6,500 total Pre-Model 29 revolvers were produced in the five-screw frame configuration within the S-prefix serial number range of S130000 to S167500. Documented examples have been verified with serial numbers as high as S174500, with about 3,100 of these five-screw units manufactured during the first year of production in 1956. The vast majority of these first-year firearms were shipped with 6 1/2-inch barrels, while 4-inch variants did not begin shipping until late 1956, accounting for an estimated less than 25% of first-year production, and no 8 3/8-inch barrels have ever been authenticated on a five-screw frame. True to its premium target configuration, the revolver featured a half-lug pinned barrel with a shrouded extractor rod, a fluted and counter-bored cylinder, a .500-inch target hammer, a .500-inch target trigger, and target sights consisting of a red ramp insert front sight paired with a micrometer-click rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation with a white outline blade.

The distinctive grips are made of smooth walnut grips, while the serrated backstrap and forestrap boasted 6 grooves on early examples before changing to a 10-groove pattern after serial number S167000. Factory serial numbers were applied to multiple locations, including the bottom of the grip frame, the rear cylinder face, inside the yoke, within the ejector rod shroud, and underneath the extractor star, though only a factory letter of authenticity can fully confirm an individual revolver's shipping date, barrel length, and finish. This highly collectible configuration remained standard in the 1957 factory implementation of numerical model designations, after which the legendary revolver officially continued its history as the Model 29.
