Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard is a highly collectible J-frame revolver that was introduced in 1955 as one of the first lightweight concealed-carry revolvers of the modern era. Chambered in .38 Special and holding five rounds, the revolver featured an aluminum alloy frame that significantly reduced weight while retaining a steel barrel and cylinder for strength. What made the Airweight Bodyguard unique was its distinctive shrouded hammer design, which protected the hammer from snagging on clothing during a draw while still allowing the shooter to manually cock the revolver for precise single-action fire. This innovative combination gave users the best features of both traditional exposed-hammer revolvers and hammerless pocket guns. Most examples were produced with a 2-inch barrel, although scarce 3-inch versions exist and command substantial collector premiums. Finished in either blue or nickel and fitted with classic walnut stocks, the Pre-Model 38 quickly became popular among detectives, undercover officers, pilots, and armed citizens who needed a lightweight, easily concealed sidearm. In 1957, Smith & Wesson began assigning model numbers and the Airweight Bodyguard officially became the Model 38. Early "Pre-38" examples are particularly desirable because of their four-screw frame construction, historical significance, and limited production period, making them some of the most sought-after vintage J-frame revolvers among Smith & Wesson collectors today.

We gladly offer a 3-day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
