Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Argentine Small Arms Commission reached out to Mauser in 1886 for replacing their Remington Rolling Block rifles. They placed an order for 180,000 rifles and 30,000 carbines, all chambered in 7.65×53mm Mauser. These arms were designated Mauser Modelo 1891 and were manufactured by the Ludwig Loewe company and the Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken. As per reports, some M1891 carbines were still being used by the Argentine Police in the 1960s.

Between 1897 and 1901, Bolivia purchased 15,000 Argentine-made Modelo 1891s which were designated as Modelo 1895 (not to be confused with the Mauser Model 1895). These saw action during the Chaco War. Colombia and Ecuador also purchased Argentine-made M1891s. Peru purchased an identical rifle from the Ludwig Loewe & Co factory, called the Peruvian Model 1891. Thousands of these were purchased.

Spain bought around 1,200 Mauser 1891 rifles and carbines in 7.65×53mm Mauser for testing purposes. Later on, the Kingdom adopted the Mauser Model 1893, which fired the 7×57mm Mauser cartridge. To suppress the Melilla revolt in the Moroccan Rif, Spain bought several thousands of Modelo 1891 rifles and carbines from Argentina in 1893. These guns were later shipped to Cuba, where they were captured by American forces in 1898 at the end of the Spanish–American War.
