Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1903 was the first semi-automatic firearm that was commercially available and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The rifle was designed by T.C. Johnson, who had joined Winchester in 1885 and had gained national recognition as a successful inventor of rifles. The rifle was initially chambered for the .22 Winchester Automatic cartridge.

In 1919, the Model 1903 was renamed to Model 03 and later, in the 1930s, it underwent a partial redesign and was given the name Model 63. The new model was designed to fire the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, which was more popular among customers than the previously used .22 Winchester Automatic cartridge. This change was made in response to customer demand.

The Model 1903 rifle was available in two versions - a "standard" and a "deluxe" version, also known as the "plain" and "fancy" versions. The standard version had a plain walnut stock with a straight grip, while the deluxe version had a checkered walnut pistol grip stock with a checkered forearm. The rifle had a tubular magazine located in the buttstock that could hold up to ten cartridges. The first 5000 rifles produced did not have a safety mechanism, but a cross-bolt safety was added later. The Model 63, which was introduced in 1933, was chambered for the widely available .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Initially, it was made with a 20" barrel, but from 1936 until the end of production in 1958, it was made with a 23" barrel.

Production totaled approximately 126,000 Model 1903 rifles and about 175,000 Model 63 rifles.
