Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1906, Morris Smith designed and patented the Model G, a semi-automatic and pump action rifle. Smith was the first person to apply for a patent on a rifle that was gas-operated. To select the action type, there is a little knob at the front of the gas tube, which can enable or disable the gas system. Since it was one of the first gas-operated semi-autos, Mr. Smith was venturing into uncharted territory, which led to some design shortcomings. The design flaws were primarily in the semi-auto operation, which would eventually lead the company to discontinue the rifle. The rifle was available in .25, .30, and .35 Remington, good calibers of the time but had a little too much pressure for the design. Approximately 7,000 were made, making them a nice piece for C&R collectors and they also represent a piece of arms development history.
