Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1927, Colt recognized the need to align the name of their Army Special revolver with its primary consumers, prompting the transition to the more fitting designation of the Official Police. This renaming reflected its widespread adoption by numerous law enforcement agencies, including prominent ones like the New York City Police and Boston Police, and federal entities like the FBI and Treasury Department. Throughout the 1960s, the Official Police remained a cornerstone in police armament and found favor among private guard services, industrial plant guards, and civilian gun enthusiasts seeking a robust and powerful revolver. Colt catered to diverse preferences by offering various iterations of the model, featuring finishes in blue and bright nickel, barrel lengths ranging from 2 to 6 inches, and calibers spanning from .22LR to .41 Long Colt. Grip options evolved over time, transitioning from checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions to "Coltwood" plastic grips with molded-in medallions, before returning to checkered walnut as the standard. The Official Police enjoyed a lengthy production run from 1927 to 1969, with a distinct pre-war era spanning from 1927 to 1946 characterized by features like the rounded "half moon" front sight, checkered trigger, hammer, and cylinder release, along with the older-style cylinder retention system.
