This is an example of a Lend Lease pistol sent to England during World War II. Although the pistol was not made in England, it was stamped with British Proof to comply with English proofing laws. However, it was used very little in England as the caliber was unpopular.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca Gun Company manufactured 400,000 M1911A1 pistols from 1943 to 1945, equivalent to the number produced by Colt. The quality of Ithaca guns was comparable to that of other manufacturers, and all Ithaca M1911A1 pistols bear an inspector mark 'FJA,' which stands for Frank J. Atwood. The British-proof markings on this pistol do not necessarily mean that the weapon served with the UK forces in World War II. Such markings simply indicate that the firearm was in Great Britain at one time and subsequently departed the country. British law requires that any gun in Great Britain be inspected and "proofed" (and so marked) before leaving the country. It certainly doesn't preclude a Canadian soldier posted to England during WWII with the M1911 in his possession. When he departed England to return home, his pistol could have been proofed and marked, but this is speculation. While certainly not impossible, it cannot be assumed that the British acquired the pistol during WWII.
