Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the war the SS sought to create their own procurement and manufacturing channels outside of the Army’s contracts.  In 1943 the SS setup manufacturing at the Gusen concentration camp and Radom for K98 parts with assembly at Steyr (military code BNZ).   These early rifles were assembled with only a small number of parts serialed and with no waffen acceptance proofs.  The receiver on this rifle came from Gusen (the BNZ on the receiver lacks the trailing “.” which was used with Radom receivers) and is a good representative example of these contract rifles.  They were manufactured and assembled under the worst possible conditions and the early rifles typically show a very rough finish with none of the polish and fitting you see in those done under the Army contracts.
