Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Hi-Power is a 9mm semi-automatic handgun made by FN Herstal based on John Browning designs. It's used and by several armies worldwide. Initially, the "High Power" pistol was designed by John M. Browning in 1925 and was patented in the USA in 1927, soon after the death of the Browning. The design was acquired by Belgian state-owned company FN Herstal, and improved by FN designer Dieudonne Saive. The resulting pistol was shelved until 1935, when Belgian army was ready to adopt new sidearm. The HP was offered for trials and won, and was adopted as a Model 1935 pistol. Soon after that it was also adopted by Belgian police and by many foreign countries, including British Commonwealth ones (UK, Canada, Australia etc.). The High Power is the only sidearm that served both sides in WWII - Germany used many HPs manufactured in occupied Belgium, while the Allies used HPs manufactured mostly in Canada by the company Inglis.

During the early 1960s and late 1960s, the Province of Buenos Aires ordered Hi Power pistols from FN in two separate contracts. The first contract was in 1961 with a total of 8,000 Hi Power pistols with internal extractors supplied. A follow-up contract was placed in 1968, for Hi Power pistols of the Belgian 1965 pattern, which were equipped with external extractors. In the early 1970s, Hi Power pistols were ordered from DGFM, a local manufacturer, and all of these pistols were used until the mid-1990s.

However, due to difficulties in sourcing spare parts for the Hi Power pistols from the 1961 contract, the Province of Buenos Aires decided to withdraw them from use and sell them as surplus. Meanwhile, Hi Power pistols from the 1968 contract and those made in Argentina are still in use with the Province of Buenos Aires Police, making them hard to find in private collections.
