Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Pistole Vz.82, commonly known as the CZ 82, is a Czechoslovak-designed semi-automatic pistol developed between 1979 and 1982 by Augustin Necas and his team at Ceská zbrojovka Uherský Brod. Adopted into military service in 1983, it replaced the aging vz.52 as Czechoslovakia transitioned to the Warsaw Pact-standard 9x18mm Makarov cartridge. The CZ 82 employs a fixed-barrel, blowback-operated design with double-action/single-action functionality and a 12-round double-stack magazine—offering significantly greater capacity than its Soviet Makarov counterpart. Notably, it was among the first military pistols to feature fully ambidextrous controls, including the frame-mounted safety and magazine release. The barrel is chrome-lined and polygonally rifled, a design choice originally intended to accommodate an experimental Czech cartridge with a sintered iron core.

Weighing approximately 1.75 pounds unloaded, the pistol is compact yet robust, known for its accuracy and soft recoil. While generally safe when carried with the hammer down, the absence of a firing pin block means it does not meet modern drop safety standards—a factor that contributed to its eventual replacement in police service. Nevertheless, the CZ Vz.82 remains a popular surplus firearm, valued for its ergonomic design, reliability, and unique Cold War lineage.
