The Franchi LAW-12 shotgun is a semi-automatic weapon that uses an annular gas piston located around the magazine tube below the barrel. The bolt is locked to the barrel extension by a single tilting locking piece that's mounted inside the bolt. The LAW-12 also features a unique dual manual safety system. The 'travel safety' is located at the front of the trigger guard and can be in the form of a swinging lever or a cross-bolt button. The 'quick reaction' safety is made in the form of a slider, similar to the safety used on the M1 Garand rifle, and can be flicked off by the index finger inserted into the trigger guard.
Other features of the LAW-12 include a screw-on choke system, and several types of stocks compatible with SPAS-12. The standard stock is of a fixed type and made from plastic, along with a separate pistol grip. The optional top-folding stock features a swinging "arm hook" that allows the gun to be held and fired more or less steadily by a single hand.
