Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the mid-19th century, Allen & Wheelock was established in 1831 and was a major player in American arms manufacturing. Unlike other prominent producers like Colt and Remington, they focused on creating firearms for civilian use rather than securing government contracts.

This revolver, known as the Allen & Wheelock Sidehammer, was manufactured between 1859 and 1862, with around 1000 units produced. Throughout the production period, minor variations were made based on how the cylinder pin was secured, as well as changes to the frame and hammer shape, and the grip angle towards the end of production. There are three main models of the revolver, with sub-variations and transitional variants. The guns were all single action revolvers, with a side-mounted hammer, spur trigger, and octagonal barrels ranging from 2 7/8” to 5” in length. The Allen arms were batch numbered instead of serial numbered, so the existing numbers don't provide much indication of quantity made, and low numbers are common, sometimes even duplicated. This particular model is a “2nd Model”, and the inclusion of the July 3, 1860 patent date on the frame, forward of the cylinder, indicates that it was produced after this date.
