Who would have thought a .50 caliber anti-material rifle would ever be used in close quarters combat? Barrett did. That's why they designated this rifle as the M82A1(CQ). "CQ" stands for "Close Quarters", and means everyone and everything within the effective range of this rifle better watch out. But don't let the shorter barrel fool you. The effective range is still quite far, capable of destroying targets out to 1000 yards.
As a little comparison, the average energy produced by a .30-06 is somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 foot pounds of force. The .50 BMG produces a downright insulting 10,000 to 15,000 foot pounds, making the little .30 caliber look like a varmint round. The half inch pointed projectile also suffers less from "wind-drift", due to the weight and intertia. And now, if you have the muscles, you can easily shoulderfire this beast, sending 10 rounds of half inch wide, 10-15 thousand foot pounds of freedom downrange to make pink mist out of that watermelon that has been making fun of you all morning.
