Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The story of Charles Stanley Rosson, also known as Charles III, starts with his father, Charles Rosson (Charles II) from 4 Market Place, Derby, and his grandfather, Charles Rosson (Charles I) from 56 Hatchett Street, Birmingham. In 1905, Charles II purchased Edwin Wilson's business located at 13 Rampant Horse Street, Norwich, Norfolk, and put Charles III in charge of running it while he retired. The Norwich establishment sold guns under the Derby address for many years.

In 1913, Charles III and Percy Rosson patented a single trigger and safety catch (No. 4883). After Charles II passed away on August 8, 1914, Percy inherited the Derby business and Charles III took over the Norwich business, which was renamed C S Rosson & Co.

In 1931, Charles III patented a sliding top lever (No. 360608), which was utilized with Edwin V Smith's easy opening action. During this time, the company's guns were made in Birmingham by Edwin V Smith, Skimmin & Wood, and Joseph Curry among others. In 1942, the 13 Rampant Horse Street location was bombed, destroying all the records. The company relocated to 427 Unthank Road and then to White Lion Street in around 1946.

From 1946, Gallyon & Sons managed the company from the Kings Lynn branch. In 1947, the Rosson family regained control, and R J B Mills appeared to be the actual manager of the business at the time (he passed away in 1953). Charles III passed away on January 20, 1950, and the company presumably remained in family ownership with management in place. In the early 1950s, the company became a limited company, C S Rosson & Co Ltd, and moved to 7 Bedford Street. At that time, the company had guns made for them by S Wright & Sons of Birmingham (in 1954, Fred Wright left the firm to join Grant & Lang as a jobber, stripper, and finisher).

In 1953, the company, which had become one of the largest provincial cartridge makers, formed a new company with Charles Hellis & Sons Ltd to make cartridges. Hellis had been one of, if not the largest, cartridge maker in London. Hellis Rosson Ltd was not successful and ceased trading in 1956 (see Charles Hellis and Hellis & Rosson). On May 1, 1965, Gallyon & Sons Ltd purchased the firm of C S Rosson and relocated their head office to the Rosson premises at 7 Bedford Street.
