Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Charles Henry Osborn / Osborne was born on 14 August 1819 in Birmingham. He was the son of James Osborn (a gunsmith b.1796) and Jane (b.1796), and the brother of John (b.1816), Henry (b.1821) and Jane (b.1826). The family were recorded in the 1841 census living in Fisher Street, Birmingham. Charles Henry was not at home on the night of the census, aged 32 he was probably married and living elsewhere in Birmingham. In the census Henry and John were both described as gunsmiths but no further record of them has been found.

In 1858 when he was 39 years old Charles Henry Osborne was appointed a Guardian of the Birmingham Proof House. This indicates that he was one of the most important men in the Birmingham gun trade. The 1861 census records Charles Henry, Mary and a servant named Mary Jones living at Royal Exchange, 118 Great Colmore Street. Charles again described himself as a retail brewer. Mary Jones was born in 1840 in Tipton, Staffordshire, a couple of miles from Enville (see below). The Royal Exchange building appears to have had its main entrance on to Great Colmore Street and on the opposite side of the building an entrance to Irving Street. Charles Osborne must have had an agent in London, probably from about 1850, but the agent's identity is not known. The firm supplied both London and provincial makers e.g. Holland & Holland with single barrel shotguns, and other gun makers with all types of shotguns and rifles; the firm also made pepperbox revolvers (about 1850 marked Chas Osborne, London) and other revolvers (Chas Osborne's Improved Revolver with Colt type rammer and six cylinders).

he 1871 census records Charles Henry as a 52 year old retired gun maker living in High Street, Harborne, with his wife Mary. On the night of the census staying with them was Charles' sister, Jane Terry (b.1826 in Birmingham), Maria Jones (b.1816 in Enville - Charles Henry's sister-in-law) and Mary Jones (b.1840 in Tipton - housekeeper). Although Charles had retired the business continued in his name, and as he described himself as a 52 year old retired gun maker it seems he had sold his brewing business and Charles Francis Ellis had taken over the gun making business, probably paying for it out of profits over a number of years.
