Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The CZ 557 American is a bolt-action hunting rifle built on CZ-USA’s 557 platform, offered in both long- and short-action configurations. Unlike older models, such as the CZ 550, which features a Mauser-style controlled-feed bolt, the 557 line (including the American) uses a push-feed action with a short extractor and plunger-style ejector, allowing smoother bolt manipulation and easier single-loading. The rifle features a 24-inch cold-hammer-forged, factory-lapped barrel and a receiver with integral 19mm dovetails, allowing for direct scope mounting to the action without the need for bases. Many versions come with an American-style Turkish walnut stock, featuring a straight comb, checkered grip and forend, and a pistol grip that includes a subtle palm swell; synthetic-stock versions were also offered. The 557 American is equipped with a fully adjustable single-stage trigger and a two-position safety located behind the bolt handle. Factory chamberings included 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win, .270 Win, 7mm-08, .308 Win, and .30-06 (depending on whether the version was a short- or long-action), giving shooters a range of cartridge choices. The combination of its build quality, action design, barrel configuration, and stock styles made it a versatile rifle for general hunting use. The 557 American — like the rest of the 557 series — was discontinued by CZ around 2020.
