The Egyptian Rasheed Carbine is a distinctive semi-automatic firearm that showcases a unique blend of design influences and military heritage. Chambered in the robust 7.62x39mm caliber, this carbine features a 20 5/8-inch blue barrel, complemented by a permanently attached folding bayonet that echoes the functionality seen in the Soviet SKS. The bayonet, measuring 12 inches, pivots from a mount beneath the barrel, providing both a tactical advantage in close combat and an aesthetic reminiscent of its Russian counterparts. The smooth walnut stock adds a touch of elegance to the design, while also ensuring a comfortable grip for shooters.
Designed by Swedish engineer Erik Eklund, the Rasheed is a derivative of the Hakim Rifle, itself based on the Swedish Ag m/42. Although only around 8,000 units were produced for the Egyptian military, the Rasheed has become a collector's item due to its rarity and distinctive features. Its sights include a hooded front post and an adjustable escalator rear sight, capable of adjusting from short-range "battle" settings to increments of 100 to 1000 meters, though its practical effective range is about 300 meters. The gas-operated, direct impingement mechanism allows for reliable operation, although users must exercise caution, as the receiver can heat up significantly during firing, presenting a potential burn hazard when reloading with stripper clips. Overall, the Rasheed Carbine is not only a functional firearm but also a fascinating artifact of military design history.
