Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 7.62×39mm (aka 7.62 Soviet, formerly .30 Russian Short) round is a rimless bottlenecked intermediate cartridge of Soviet origin. The cartridge is widely used due to the worldwide proliferation of Russian SKS and AK-47 pattern rifles, as well as RPD and RPK light machine guns.
The vz. 58, also known as Sa vz. 58, is an assault rifle that uses 7.62×39mm ammunition. It was designed and produced in Czechoslovakia and was accepted into service in the late 1950s under the name 7,62 mm samopal vzor 58. It replaced the vz. 52 self-loading rifle and the 7.62×25mm Tokarev Sa 24 and Sa 26 submachine guns.
Although the vz. 58 may look like the AK-47, but it actually uses a unique design based on a short-stroke gas piston. It does not share any parts with Kalashnikov rifles, including the magazine.
