Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The gun was designed by Lucius M.Diehm, who worked for Colt & Winchester in his youth. Diehm was granted his 1st patent in 1915, then a series of patents in 1919 for a series of .22 pistols - a manually-operated repeater, a single-shot, and an autoloader. All his patents were first partially assigned to Berkley C.Stone of Middletown (CT), said to be involved with Middletown Firearms Co - but no pistols were produced until after Diehm left there in 1925, and founded the Hartford Arms & Equipment Co on Capitol Ave in Hartford (CT), where the single shot & autoloader were first made. In 1931/32 The Hartford Arms & Equipment Company had fallen on hard times, it was the Great Depression. Unemployment had doubled to 16.3%, many companies were shutting their doors. During the six years they were in production Hartford Arms had only managed to make 5000 pistols.
