Markings: The left side of the barrel is stamped HAWES FIREARMS CO / LOS ANGELES, CALIF MADE IN WEST BERLIN / MADE IN GERMANY .22 LR / (Serial #). The bottom of the receiver is stamped with the serial number and German-proof marks.
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This is a Hawes Favorite pistol chambered in .22 caliber rimfire. Although it lacks the word "Favorite" anywhere on it, the design is based on the J.A. Stevens No. 35, a pistol and small rifle that has been around since the turn of the 20th century. As a single-shot pistol with no feed mechanism, it can fire .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges, which are identical except for their case length and propellant capacity. While it is intended for use with .22 LR, it can also handle smaller cartridges such as .22 Short and .22 Long due to their size, much like how a .44 Magnum revolver can also use .44 Special and .44 Russian cartridges.
(Through research, we have come across a statement on the internet that suggests the firearms marketed by Hawes were produced by the German company J.P. Sauer & Sohn, which is currently recognized as one-half of the Swiss-German arms conglomerate SIG Sauer. However, we have not been able to verify this information.)
