Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the early 1940s, Colt ceased production of the Single Action Army to focus on the war effort during World War II. There were no plans to reintroduce the old Colt SAA. This left a couple of generations without easy access to the iconic revolver, which played a significant role in the old West and was romanticized in films.
Ruger filled the gap in the market by introducing their Single Six 22LR revolver in June 1953. At the same time, engineer William R. Wilson, also known as Bill, started manufacturing and exporting replicas of the famous Colt 1873 Single Action Army. With the assistance of Haywood "Hy" Hunter and J.P. Sauer & Sohn, who established a new base of operations in Eckernförde, West Germany, The Great Western Arms Company began production of Colt SAA clones in 1954. The revolvers were manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn, imported by The Great Western Arms Company, and primarily sold through Hy Hunter. The Hy Hunter catalogs played a significant role in marketing these Western revolvers, but unfortunately, they were the only means of marketing. This led to financial difficulties for the Great Western Arms Company, resulting in one investor/debtor taking control and replacing Hy Hunter with E&M (Early & Modern Firearms, Inc.) and Stoeger. By late 1958, the Great Western Arms Company had gone bankrupt and ceased importing.
In the 1960s, a former employee of Hy Hunter took over the importation and distribution of revolvers, whether rimfire or otherwise, under the name Hawes Firearms Co. Production of these revolvers continued until around 1980, when the Hawes Firearms Company went out of business. This high-quality Hawes firearm is a full-size, full-weight, authentic replica of the famous Western single-action six-shooter that was used by most of the famous Western Marshals of the Old West. It is manufactured to the highest American standards by some of the finest gunsmiths in the world at J. P. Sauer Company of West Germany. As a discerning gun owner, you will want to consider adding other fine 6-shooter models to your collection. When you do, consider all of the prestigious guns in the Hawes collection. You will be assured of the finest quality and craftsmanship in the world!
