Husqvarna Vapenfabriks A.B. (Aktiebolag) was a Swedish arms manufacturer that had over a 300 year long history. The company was originally founded by order of the Swedish Crown as the Jönköping Rifle Factory in 1620. In 1689 an arsenal was established in the town of Huskvarna (spelled Husqvarna at the time) in Southern Sweden. The town was selected due to its strategic location adjacent to water walls which were used to power the hydroelectric machinery used in the manufacturing process of arms at the time. In the mid-18th century the Swedish Crown transferred ownership of the enterprise to a private citizen, Fredrik Ehrenpreuss, and the Ehrenpreuss family ran the arsenal until the early 19th century. The company would change ownership several times over ensuing decades, by the early 20th century the firm diversified into a number of fields including the production of motorcycles, sewing machines, typewriters and hunting weapons. The company would continue to make guns until 1967 when it discontinued all arms production. Other divisions of Husqvarna are still in operation today.
