Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This 1944 World War II semi-auto rifle is an IBM M1 U.S. Carbine chambered in .30 Carbine. It has a fixed front sight with protective sides, a dovetailed flip aperture rear sight, a checkered steel butt plate, no bayonet lug, and a sling loop at the top. BM manufactured approximately 346,500 M1 Carbines, making this firearm relatively rare. This .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle was first used by the United States Armed Forces on October 22, 1941, but IBM began its production of this firearm in October 1943 and ended in May 1944 having manufactured the M1 Carbine for only eight months. Despite having a similar name and appearance, the M1 Carbine is not a carbine version of the M1 Garand rifle. They are different firearms and use different ammunition. Prior to World War II, U.S. Army Ordnance received many reports that the full-size M1 Garand was too heavy and cumbersome for most support troops, such as mortarmen and radiomen to carry, so the M1 U.S. Carbine was designed to fulfill the request for a compact, lightweight defensive weapon with greater range, accuracy and firepower than handguns.
