Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J. Stevens & Co. Tip-Up Single Shot rifle series, produced from the 1870s through 1895, represents a noteworthy period in American firearms design characterized by simplicity, utility, and adaptability. These rifles are easily recognized by their distinctive sloped, nickel-plated iron frames, which were consistent across most variants, with a lighter version used for the "Ladies Model." While model numbers were not marked on the rifles themselves, the series offered a wide range of options for users, including barrel lengths of 24", 26", 28", and 30", and chamberings from .22 rimfire up to .44 centerfire cartridges. A shotgun version was also available. The guns featured blued barrels, walnut two-piece stocks, and a variety of sight and buttplate configurations. Despite these options, all Tip-Up rifles shared a core design that emphasized user-friendly operation and rugged construction, making them popular among recreational shooters, hunters, and target enthusiasts of the late 19th century.

This particular example of the Tip-Up rifle is outfitted with a 27 ¾" heavy octagon barrel and retains the classic Stevens aesthetic with its nickel-plated frame and blued barrel. The dovetail blade front sight combined with an elevator-adjustable rear sight makes it suitable for precise shooting at varying ranges. The smooth walnut straight grip stock and matching forearm are characteristic of Stevens' emphasis on both form and function. As with many early Stevens rifles, the left side of the barrel is stamped with the manufacturer’s information and the 1864 patent date, while the serial number appears on both the barrel and trigger guard. The clean simplicity of the Tip-Up action, combined with durable construction and customizable features, solidified the Stevens Tip-Up as a reliable and versatile rifle during an era when affordable, quality firearms were in high demand.
