Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The original Stevens "Favorite" was patented in April 1894 and first appeared in the Stevens Catalog for that year. It became one of the most popular rifles of all time. Because of its small size and light weight it could be used by everyone, from professional trappers to youths alike. It was made almost continuously until just before World War II.

According to the "a tribute to the man and his accomplishments" booklet,

The year 1971 marks the reintroduction of one of the most desirable commemorative rifles ever built - the Stevens Favorite. Issued by Savage Arms as the model 71 in a strictly limited collectors edition, it is faithful recreation of the original Favorite, not only in appearance but in excellence of performance. A top-quality working rifle that is also a collectors item would be highly desirable even if there were no more to the story. But the 1971 Stevens Favorite also has a special historic significance.

Like the rifle that had such an impact on hunting in the 1890's, the 1971 Stevens Favorite is a lever action single shot of the falling block type, considered by many authorities to be the most reliable cartridge-firing action ever devised. The 22-inch barrel on some of the earliest Favorites was octagonal only from the receiver to the end of the forearm and round from there to the muzzle, but Stevens also offered a handsomer, fully octagonal barrel. The 1971 edition boasts the fully octagonal barrel, duplicating the best of the old Favorites. The receiver is case-hardened. The wood is select, oil-finished walnut replete with authentic schnabel fore-end and crescent butt plate.

A truly valuable commemorative arm has distinctive features that will be immediately discernible to future collectors. The Model 71 Favorite boasts a lever, rear sight ramp, and hammer encased in gold. The rifle style butt plate and front sight blade are cartridge brass. The words Stevens Favorite are inscribed on both sides of the receiver. And, as a tribute to the man and his accomplishments, a cartridge brass medallion, inlet into the stock, bears a portrait of Joshua Stevens, his name and his well earned title: Father of .22 Hunting.
